Selecting a Musical Instrument for Your Child to Engage Them to Become a Band Member

You have always dreamt for your child to become part of a band. This is the reason why you are so involved in the process of selecting a musical instrument for your child. There is a limit to what you can do in the process because even though you can afford the most expensive band instrument, there are certain qualifications that your kid must pass to be able to join a band.

To begin with, bring the kid to your local band director. The latter will assess them based on the kinds of instruments where they can be good at. They will base this assessment on the physical qualities, health and potential of your kid to be good with any band instruments. If you want to proceed in acquiring instruments before you can have your kids assessed by a band director, here are some tips that you can consider before you settle for any kinds of musical instruments.

1. If the kid has thin lips, they will be better off with high brass or woodwind instruments like clarinet. For kids with fuller lips, they can utilize this feature on instruments with larger mouthpieces like the tuba or trombone. If they have a significant overbite, they can choose instruments that won't be that hard to contain on the lips, such as flute, clarinet and saxophone.

2. If your child is suffering from asthma, you should ask the permission of their doctor before you get them into this kind of activity. If they will be given a go signal, you must stay away from wind instruments and prefer the percussion types.

3. If you think that your child has the potentials of learning popular band instruments like saxophone and drums, go ahead and let them try these. You never know where this interest may lead them in the future. The good thing about it is that they will bring with them the talents that they have honed while young long after they have grown up and have chosen other paths to pursue.

4. When you are certain that your kid will require dental tools like retainers and braces as they grow a bit older, you can let them play woodwind instrument where this condition won't matter too much. Braces can become a big problem if they have to perform brass instruments.

Your role as a parent is important in selecting a musical instrument for your child because you will pay for the equipment as well as the training that will follow. After this, you should allow the kid to enjoy the process and learn things at their own pace and let them decide if they want to give in to your request for them to join a band.
