Your kid is only learning how to walk and yet you are already thinking about so many things, which include selecting a musical instrument for your child. Blame it on so many popular talent shows that have produced great artists and many other so-so personalities. It is not a sin to dream that your child could be big someday, but it will be safer to think that you want them to learn how to play an instrument to help them hone some skills, which can be useful as they grow older.
Once you have forgotten about the talent search dilemma and have focused on what could be ideal for your child when they grow up, here are some things that you should think about in choosing the right instrument for them.
First off, let them choose. You can always provide suggestions and feedbacks, but allow them to say what they think about the ideas presented to them. You can tell them about the pros and cons of learning how to play the violin, guitar or the piano. You can also cite as examples those who have made it big on talent search shows that you are so fond of, through the use of musical instruments. Through this, they will have clearer ideas as to what it's like to become a good and even a pro with their chosen instrument.
You should also consider your budget. If you can't afford to send your child to piano classes and you cannot buy them even a second-hand piano, then tell them about it, especially if this is their first choice. Ask them to choose other kinds that won't cost as much when it comes to lessons and on acquiring the piece.
You should also choose the kind of instrument that would be ideal for your child's body type. When you enroll them to music lessons, they would have to carry the instruments most of the time. You should consider giving them suitable equipments for their weight, length of their arms and fingers, and the kind of material that is easy to learn for their age. You don't want to cause any frustrations to them at such a young age.
When the child is already learning the instrument that both of you have chosen, you should still be there to provide care and help whenever they need you. If they don't want to go on with the lessons, allow them to have a break and ask them about their decisions after they have thought about everything.
