It is just great to have a son or daughter or somebody in the family who can play a musical instrument. It is natural for children to develop interest in music, since they have an inquisitive and imaginative mind which would surely encourage them to learn musical instruments.
There are parents who are quite aware of the benefits and effects of music education on their children. There are numerous studies showing children to develop positive attitude like patience, perseverance, self-confidence and even develop better coordination and dexterity.
However, learning musical instruments should not be forced. It is better for parents to encourage their children to actually get into music. There are some children who would eventually stop playing the instrument since they are not really into it. Parents should always keep in mind that learning to play the violin or the piano are not the only musical instruments, it is fine for children to be interested in playing other instruments like tuba or cello.
To motivate your child to get into music, you could start by:
Exposing your kid to different genres of music. There are different CDs of classical and orchestral music that has solos in them. This would help your child get an idea what musical instrument could interest him. Watching concerts could even help your child develop interest in music and at the same time make you and your child closer.
Talk to them about taking lessons for a particular instrument. What children least like is being signed up for something that they do not know or not expecting. Talk to them about any interest in musical instrument and if they would like sign up for any lessons. For all you know, they may be excited or have been thinking about it for some time.
Do some research with your child. If your child is still trying to makeup his mind about a musical instrument, then you could start by doing some research. You could easily do that on the internet. Search some instruments and their sounds, to be familiar with them.
Never stereotype them with a particular instrument. If they would like to try an instrument that you would not touch even in a million years, do not contradict or force them to do your way. Let them try and decide if they want to pursue it.
There are musical instruments which are children- friendly or have smaller sizes which could easily be handled by your kid. You do not have to buy immediately, you could start by borrowing or renting a musical instrument. Some would say that it would take for kids about three months to have the "feel" if they would like to continue with a particular musical instrument.
